Who I am
Hi! My name is Missy, and I’m the artist behind Bee Kind by Missy.
Classically educated in design, but a frustrated artist. A little more than 10 years ago, I began collecting new fabric from the wasteful disposal of the design center and wanting to transform these new lovely fabrics into fresh product. I began as a modest crafter, only making items for myself and close friends. I started making trinkets as gifts for holidays, birthdays, and celebrations — and people loved them. That’s when I wondered: Well, if people love these so much, why aren’t I selling them? In 2015 I started Bee Kind..
Fast forward to today… and I love what I do. I’m constantly challenging myself with new products and always looking for exposure at new venues. I do have to monitor inventory as some items do sell out. I’ve shipped my products all over the United States. And I’m just getting started.
I can’t wait to share the products I love with you. It has been a wonderful journey of art and exploration.
What I sell
All my products are created from new discarded or unwanted fabrics and materials. I procure these “misfit materials” at various locations including thrift stores, retail stores, and artistry warehouses like Fabmo (a non-profit organization which collects its materials from The San Francisco Design Showcase Center and other donations). The abundant amount of new unused material is overwhelming, and I happily donate to support these causes.
Sewn goods (potholders, wine bags, sachets, and placemats): You never know what you’re going to get at these places… but that’s half the fun! Because of this, I create unique products with the most unusual fabrics — which make them truly one-of-a-kind. Once I collect a fabric sample, I determine whether it is fit to become a potholder, wine bag, sachet, or a set of placements. Each speaks to me in some way, based on size, content or color. Some of these fabrics you could recognize in your own décor, or you may never have seen — even as a designer.
Garden flowers (consignment available!): With these items, the idea is the same: celebrating misfit material. And similar to the others, I’ll purchase this material (glass and repurposed copper plumbing pipe) from donations (I will literally come to your house), thrift and resale stores. Additionally, I offer customizable pieces. Maybe grandmas platter or bowl is not right in the house, but would make a lovely piece of garden art. Can be a fun way to explore your family and art together.
